PgITD, an abbreviation for Penang International Triathlon & Duathlon together with our tagline “ Lets Tri & Du It” were mooted after much consideration.
The history of triathlon in Malaysia actually starts in Penang but unfortunately due to a massive jellyfish attack during the last triathlon 14 years ago, it was abandoned. Ever since that fateful day, the romanticism of reviving the Penang Triathlon has never ceased. Numerous attempts to resurrect the event failed because of the swimming venue.
When the suggestion to revive it came from the CM office, the PgITD protem committee took up the challenge not knowing the obstacles ahead. Initially, the Teluk Bahang Dam was secured as the swim site but due to an accidental non related incident at the Teluk Bahang Dam, the swim site is now shifted to the Teluk Bahang coast. The site is a beautiful protected bay and extensive preventive jellyfish measures are depolyed. Among them are specially designed jellyfish nets surrounding the swim site and deployed a fishing boat to repeated trawled the site running up to the event date.
A duathlon was later incorporated into the event mainly to give athletes who do not like to swim or who may later aspire to swim a chance to participate.
The pend up demand for the Penang International Tri & Duathlon is reflected in our registration whereby all the 800 slots were fully subscribed within a few hours for the triathlon and few days for the duathlon.
As this is a coming home event for the Penang state, we hope all athletes will enjoy the event and please swim, bike and run safely.
